Why Reclaimed Lumber?
Better for the planet.
Better for your project.
Reclaimed lumber isn't just an eco-conscious choice — it's a superior building material. Old-growth timber harvested decades ago is denser, more stable, and more visually striking than anything coming off modern mills. When you choose reclaimed, you get premium quality wood while keeping it out of landfills and reducing demand for new deforestation.

100% Recycled
Every board we sell has been given a second life, keeping it out of landfills.
Saves Trees
Using reclaimed lumber reduces demand for new timber harvesting.
Superior Strength
Old-growth lumber is denser and more dimensionally stable than new wood.
Unique Character
Natural patina, nail holes, and grain patterns you can't replicate.
Our Competitive Edge
What Sets Us Apart
Houston Lumber is not a middleman or a broker. We own and operate every step of the reclaimed lumber supply chain, from initial salvage to final delivery. That level of vertical integration is rare in this industry, and it translates into better quality, faster turnaround, and lower costs for our customers.
Vertically Integrated Operation
We control the entire lifecycle of reclaimed lumber under one roof. From demolition and salvage to processing, grading, and delivery, there are no handoffs to third parties. This means we can guarantee chain-of-custody transparency, maintain consistent quality standards at every stage, and pass along the cost savings that come from eliminating middlemen. When you buy from Houston Lumber, you are buying directly from the source.
Our Own Processing Facility
Our 25,000-square-foot processing yard in Houston is equipped with industrial de-nailers, metal detectors, planers, resaws, and a commercial kiln. Every board that enters our facility goes through a rigorous workflow: de-nailing, metal scanning, grading, drying, and surfacing to spec. We process upwards of 50,000 board feet per month, which means we can fill large commercial orders just as easily as small custom requests without sacrificing turnaround time.
Our Own Fleet
Logistics is one of the biggest challenges in the reclaimed lumber business, and most suppliers rely on third-party freight. We invested early in building our own transportation fleet — flatbeds, box trucks, and trailers sized for everything from a few hundred board feet to full truckloads. Owning our fleet lets us control scheduling, reduce damage in transit, and offer competitive delivery rates across the entire Gulf South region.
Expert Grading Team
Reclaimed lumber grading requires a trained eye and deep species knowledge. Our grading team has a combined 40-plus years of experience evaluating salvaged timber. They assess each piece for structural integrity, species identification, moisture content, and cosmetic character. This rigorous grading process ensures that you get exactly what you order — whether that is select-grade heart pine for a visible accent wall or utility-grade mixed hardwood for structural framing.
Sustainability-First Approach
Sustainability is not a marketing buzzword for us — it is the foundation of our business model. Every board we sell is a board that did not go to a landfill and a tree that stayed standing. We track our environmental metrics meticulously: tons diverted from waste streams, board feet reclaimed, estimated carbon offsets. We publish these numbers transparently because we believe accountability and environmental stewardship go hand in hand.
Gulf South Coverage
From our home base in Houston, we serve the entire Gulf South corridor and beyond. Our delivery network reaches every major metro area from San Antonio to Pensacola, with regular routes running through Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. We have developed relationships with demolition contractors, builders, and designers across five states, giving us both a steady inbound supply of quality salvaged material and the logistics infrastructure to get it where it needs to go.
Who We Work With
Industries We Serve
Reclaimed lumber is one of the most versatile building materials available. Our customers span a wide range of industries, from large-scale commercial construction to one-of-a-kind artisan projects. No matter your field, we have the inventory, expertise, and processing capabilities to meet your needs.
Residential Construction
Homebuilders and remodelers use our reclaimed lumber for flooring, accent walls, ceiling beams, mantels, and custom cabinetry. Reclaimed wood adds warmth and character that new materials simply cannot replicate, making it a top choice for high-end residential projects across Texas and Louisiana.
Commercial Construction
From corporate offices to mixed-use developments, commercial builders turn to us for large-volume orders of structural timbers, interior cladding, and decorative elements. Our processing capacity lets us fulfill orders of 10,000 board feet or more on tight schedules without compromising quality.
Restaurant & Hospitality
Restaurants, breweries, hotels, and event venues rely on reclaimed wood to create the authentic, storied atmosphere that diners and guests love. We have supplied bar tops, wall paneling, tabletops, and feature beams for dozens of hospitality projects across the Gulf South.
Historic Restoration
When restoring a historic structure, using period-appropriate materials is essential for authenticity and often required by preservation boards. Our inventory includes species and dimensions that match the lumber used in 19th and early 20th century construction, making us a go-to resource for restoration contractors.
Furniture Makers
Custom furniture makers and woodworkers source our reclaimed hardwoods — oak, walnut, heart pine, cypress — for tables, shelving, bed frames, and heirloom-quality pieces. The tight grain, rich patina, and natural character marks of salvaged wood give handmade furniture a story that resonates with buyers.
Film & Set Design
Production designers and set builders in the Gulf South film industry use our reclaimed lumber to create authentic period sets, rustic backdrops, and textured environments. We offer a wide variety of weathered finishes, species, and dimensions that can be selected or custom-processed to match any creative vision.
Landscaping
Landscape architects and designers incorporate our reclaimed timbers into raised garden beds, retaining walls, pergolas, outdoor seating, and pathway edging. The natural aging and durability of old-growth wood make it ideal for outdoor applications where appearance and longevity both matter.
Artists & Craftspeople
Sculptors, sign makers, mixed-media artists, and DIY creators source unique boards, character pieces, and offcuts from our inventory. We welcome small-quantity purchases and can help you find specific textures, grain patterns, or species for your next creative project.
What We Offer
Products & Services
In-Stock Materials
Our Inventory Includes
We maintain one of the largest inventories of reclaimed lumber in the Gulf South. Our yard is stocked with a rotating selection of species, dimensions, and grades sourced from demolition sites, barns, warehouses, and industrial facilities across the region. Here is a closer look at what we carry.
Dimensional Lumber
Standard 2x4 through 2x12 boards in various lengths, sourced primarily from residential and light commercial demolitions. Available in mixed species or sorted by species. Ideal for framing, shelving, general construction, and any application where consistent sizing matters. We surface and straight-line rip to your specifications.
Timber Beams
Heavy structural timbers in sizes ranging from 4x4 up to 12x12 and beyond, salvaged from warehouses, bridges, and industrial buildings. Many of these beams are old-growth hardwood or dense Douglas fir with century-old patina. Perfect as exposed ceiling beams, mantels, architectural features, or load-bearing structural members in new construction.
Barn Wood
Authentic weathered barn siding and barn boards with the gray, silver, and brown tones that only decades of sun and rain exposure can produce. Our barn wood comes from agricultural structures across Texas, Louisiana, and the broader South. It is prized for accent walls, cladding, furniture, and any project where a rustic weathered look is desired.
Heart Pine Flooring
Longleaf heart pine is the crown jewel of reclaimed lumber — dense, rich in color, and virtually impossible to source as new wood because the original old-growth forests were harvested over a century ago. We mill our salvaged heart pine into tongue-and-groove flooring in standard and custom widths. The result is a floor with unmatched warmth, hardness, and historical character.
Cypress Siding
Reclaimed bald cypress is naturally resistant to rot, insects, and decay, making it an exceptional choice for exterior siding, soffits, and trim. Our inventory includes both rough-sawn and milled cypress boards sourced from structures across the Gulf Coast, where the species has been a building staple for over 200 years. Available in various profiles including lap, shiplap, and board-and-batten.
Oak Planking
Red and white oak boards reclaimed from factory floors, rail cars, warehouses, and commercial buildings. Oak is one of the most versatile hardwoods — strong enough for structural use, beautiful enough for furniture and cabinetry. Our reclaimed oak features the tight grain and density of old-growth timber, and we offer it in rough-sawn, surfaced, or custom-milled profiles.
Industrial Decking
Thick, dense hardwood planks originally used as industrial warehouse flooring, truck decking, and factory work surfaces. These boards — typically 2 to 3 inches thick — are incredibly durable because they were engineered to withstand heavy machinery and foot traffic for decades. Commonly available in oak, maple, and mixed hardwoods, ideal for countertops, tabletops, and heavy-duty outdoor decking.
Railroad Ties & Landscape Timbers
Reclaimed railroad ties and heavy landscape timbers for use in garden borders, retaining walls, driveway edging, and decorative outdoor structures. We carry both treated and untreated options and can advise on the appropriate choice for your application. Available in standard 6x8 and 7x9 railroad tie dimensions as well as custom-cut landscape timbers.
Pallet Wood
Deconstructed pallet boards offer a cost-effective source of reclaimed hardwood and softwood for DIY projects, art installations, wall cladding, and small furniture pieces. We carry bulk pallet wood sorted by condition — from rough utility-grade material to cleaner select boards. Popular with makers, artists, and budget-conscious builders who want authentic reclaimed character at an accessible price point.
Custom Millwork
When your project calls for something that is not in our standard inventory, our milling team can produce custom profiles, dimensions, and finishes from our existing reclaimed stock. We offer tongue-and-groove, shiplap, bevel siding, crown molding, baseboards, and other architectural profiles milled from species including heart pine, cypress, oak, and Douglas fir. Minimum order quantities apply for custom runs.
Mixed Hardwood Bundles
For projects that call for visual variety or where species consistency is not critical, we offer bundles of mixed reclaimed hardwoods at competitive prices. These bundles may include oak, maple, hickory, ash, walnut, and other species in a range of widths and lengths. Popular for rustic feature walls, art projects, and furniture builders seeking a dynamic, multi-toned palette.
Douglas Fir Timbers
Reclaimed Douglas fir is one of the strongest softwoods available, prized for its straight grain, high strength-to-weight ratio, and warm amber tones. Our salvaged fir timbers come primarily from industrial warehouses and commercial buildings in the early-to-mid 20th century. Available in large structural dimensions as well as resawn boards for paneling and trim applications.

How Reclaimed Lumber Compares
Builders and designers often ask how reclaimed lumber stacks up against newly milled wood. The answer depends on what you value — but on most criteria that matter, reclaimed comes out ahead. Here is a direct comparison across the factors that influence material selection decisions.
| Criteria | Reclaimed Lumber | New Lumber |
|---|---|---|
| Strength & Density | Old-growth timber features tight grain with 15-30 growth rings per inch, resulting in superior hardness and structural integrity. Decades of natural seasoning eliminate internal stresses. | Plantation-grown timber has wider grain with 4-8 rings per inch. It is lighter, softer, and more prone to warping as it continues to dry after installation. |
| Cost | Competitive with new lumber for most applications. Premium grades of heart pine or old-growth cypress may command higher prices, but utility and standard grades are often comparable to or less than new lumber. | Prices fluctuate with commodity markets. New lumber prices have seen significant volatility in recent years, sometimes spiking 200-300% above historical averages during supply disruptions. |
| Character & Aesthetics | Rich natural patina, nail holes, saw marks, and grain variations that tell a story. Every board is unique. Cannot be replicated artificially — the character comes from decades of real use and weather exposure. | Clean, uniform appearance. Suitable for projects that require visual consistency, but lacks the depth, texture, and storytelling quality that defines reclaimed wood. |
| Environmental Impact | Diverts wood from landfills, extends carbon sequestration, reduces deforestation demand, and uses up to 75% less embodied energy. The most sustainable lumber option available. | Requires harvesting standing trees, energy-intensive logging and milling, and long-distance transportation. Even sustainably certified new lumber has a significantly higher environmental footprint. |
| Availability & Selection | Inventory varies by what is currently being demolished and salvaged. We maintain deep stock across popular species and sizes, but some specialty dimensions may require lead time. | Standard dimensions are readily available at any building supply store. Commodity lumber is easy to source in large, consistent quantities on short notice. |
| Consistency | Natural variation in color, patina, and character marks is inherent to reclaimed lumber. Our grading process sorts for quality and structural soundness, but visual uniformity will differ from new wood. | Machine-graded for uniformity. Each board in a given grade will look and measure very much like every other board. Ideal for applications where visual consistency is the top priority. |
| Lead Time | In-stock items ship within 2-5 business days. Custom milling and large orders typically require 1-3 weeks. We stock over 60,000 board feet at any given time to minimize wait times. | Most standard sizes are available same-day from retail suppliers. Large commercial orders or specialty species may have lead times comparable to reclaimed lumber. |
| Dimensional Stability | Decades of natural drying and stress relief mean reclaimed boards have already finished shrinking and shifting. Once kiln-dried to target moisture content, they remain exceptionally stable. | Kiln-dried new lumber is stable initially but may continue to move, twist, or check as it equalizes with its environment over the first 1-3 years after installation. |
| Species Availability | Access to species that are no longer commercially harvested, such as old-growth longleaf heart pine, American chestnut, and virgin bald cypress. These woods are simply unavailable as new lumber at any price. | Limited to species currently grown in commercial plantations. Modern plantation pine, spruce, fir, and farmed hardwoods. No access to old-growth or historically harvested species. |
| Health & Indoor Air Quality | Naturally aged wood has already off-gassed any volatile organic compounds. Reclaimed lumber contributes to better indoor air quality compared to freshly manufactured wood products that may contain formaldehyde or other chemical treatments. | Pressure-treated and chemically processed lumber may off-gas VOCs for months or years after installation. Untreated new lumber also releases natural terpenes during its initial drying period. |
