Crafted to Your Specs

Custom Fabrication from Reclaimed Wood

Houston Lumber's custom millwork program transforms raw reclaimed lumber into finished, ready-to-install products tailored to your exact specifications. Our on-site mill is equipped with industrial planers, moulders, resaws, and a kiln — everything needed to take a rough salvaged board and turn it into precision-milled flooring, tongue-and-groove paneling, custom mantels, shelving, or any other profile your project demands.

What makes our millwork different is the material itself. Every piece we produce starts as reclaimed lumber — old-growth timber with tight grain, natural patina, and the kind of character that cannot be replicated by distressing new wood. When that raw character is refined through careful milling and finishing, the result is a product that combines the warmth and history of antique wood with the precision and consistency of modern manufacturing.

We work with architects, interior designers, general contractors, and homeowners at every stage of the process. From initial material selection — choosing the right species, grade, and character level for your vision — through milling, finishing, and packaging for delivery, our team is involved every step of the way. Whether you need 200 square feet of heart pine flooring for a master bedroom or 5,000 square feet of cypress paneling for a commercial fit-out, we bring the same attention to detail and craftsmanship to every order.

The Custom Advantage

Why Choose Custom Millwork

Exact Specifications

Get precisely the width, thickness, profile, and length your project demands. No settling for standard dimensions when your design calls for something specific.

Material Control

Hand-select the reclaimed species, grade, and character level for your project. Approve samples before we process the full order. You control the look from start to finish.

One-of-a-Kind Results

Every piece of custom millwork is unique because the raw material is unique. No two boards have the same grain pattern, patina, or character marks. Your installation will be genuinely irreplicable.

Historic Authenticity

For restoration projects, we can match historic profiles by running reclaimed wood through custom knife sets. Replicate original baseboard, crown, and casing profiles from a sample piece.

Finish-Ready Delivery

Material arrives sanded, profiled, and (optionally) pre-finished. Reduces on-site labor time and dust generation. Your installer receives product that is ready for immediate installation.

Environmental Integrity

Custom millwork from reclaimed wood carries the strongest possible sustainability credentials. Zero new trees harvested, material diverted from landfill, and every piece has a documented provenance.

Project Examples

What We've Built

A sample of the custom millwork projects we have completed for clients across the Gulf South.

Heights Restaurant Renovation

Produced 3,200 square feet of reclaimed heart pine tongue-and-groove flooring for a historic Houston restaurant. Material was sourced from a demolished cotton warehouse, kiln dried to 8% moisture content, and milled to a 5-inch face width with a custom edge profile. The flooring was pre-finished with a penetrating tung oil to preserve the wood's natural patina.

River Oaks Residential Kitchen

Fabricated a 14-foot live-edge countertop from a single reclaimed cypress slab for a residential kitchen renovation. The slab was flattened, sanded to 220 grit, and sealed with a food-safe hardwax oil. We also produced matching floating shelves and a pot rack from the same cypress source for a cohesive design.

Boutique Hotel Lobby

Milled 1,800 square feet of mixed-width reclaimed oak shiplap paneling for the lobby and reception area of a boutique hotel in the Galleria area. Three different board widths — 4 inch, 6 inch, and 8 inch — were used in a randomized pattern to create visual depth. Boards were wire-brushed and finished with a matte clear coat.

Historic Home Staircase

Produced a complete set of stair components — treads, risers, stringers, handrail, and newel posts — from reclaimed longleaf pine for a 19th-century home restoration in the Heights. All profiles were custom-matched to surviving original millwork on the second floor to ensure period accuracy.

How to Order

Ordering Custom Millwork

Minimum Orders

Flooring and paneling: 100 square foot minimum per species/profile. Individual pieces (mantels, shelving, countertops): no minimum. Trim and moulding: 50 linear foot minimum per profile.

Lead Times

Standard millwork (flooring, paneling): 2 to 4 weeks from approval. Individual pieces: 1 to 2 weeks. Complex multi-component projects: 3 to 6 weeks. Rush processing available for an additional fee.

Samples & Approvals

We produce sample pieces for your approval before processing the full order. For flooring and paneling, expect a 2-foot sample section showing the profile, width, and finish. Sample fee is credited toward your order.

Finish Options

Unfinished (for on-site finishing), penetrating oil (tung, Danish, hardwax), water-based polyurethane, oil-based polyurethane, lacquer, and wax. Pre-finishing adds 3 to 5 business days to lead time but saves significant on-site labor.

Custom Profiles

We can run any profile that fits within our moulder capacity (up to 6 inches wide and 4 inches thick). Custom knife grinding is available for unique profiles at a one-time setup fee of $150 to $300.

Shipping & Packaging

Millwork products are carefully packaged for transit — flooring is banded and wrapped, mantels are crated, and delicate profiles are padded. Local delivery on our trucks; nationwide freight via LTL carrier.

Millwork Care & Maintenance

Flooring. Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove grit that can scratch the finish. Damp-mop as needed with a wood-floor-specific cleaner — avoid excessive water. Place felt pads under furniture legs and area rugs in high-traffic zones. Refinish when the topcoat shows visible wear, typically every 7 to 15 years for polyurethane and every 3 to 5 years for oil finishes.

Paneling. Interior paneling requires almost no maintenance. Dust occasionally with a dry or slightly damp cloth. If finished with oil, a light recoating every 5 to 10 years will maintain the sheen. Avoid hanging heavy objects directly from paneling — use appropriate wall anchors that reach into the substrate behind the paneling.

Mantels & Shelving. Dust regularly. For oiled or waxed finishes, reapply a thin coat of the original finish annually or as needed. Avoid placing hot objects directly on finished surfaces — use trivets or heat pads. For shelving that supports heavy objects, verify that wall anchors and brackets are rated for the load.

Countertops. Countertops finished with food-safe oil require periodic reapplication — typically every 3 to 6 months with regular kitchen use. Clean with mild soap and water. Avoid leaving standing water on the surface. Minor scratches can be sanded out and re-oiled. Countertops finished with polyurethane require less frequent maintenance but are more difficult to spot-repair.

Stair Components. Stair treads receive the most wear of any millwork product. Keep them clean of grit, use runner rugs in high-traffic areas, and plan for refinishing every 5 to 10 years. Non-slip tape or treads can be applied for safety without damaging the wood surface.

Common Questions

Custom Millwork FAQ

How much does custom reclaimed flooring cost compared to new hardwood flooring?
Custom reclaimed flooring typically ranges from $6 to $14 per square foot for material, depending on species, width, and finish. By comparison, new domestic hardwood flooring (site-finished) runs $4 to $10 per square foot, and new exotic hardwoods can reach $15+. The premium for reclaimed is modest when you consider the superior grain density, the unique character, and the environmental benefits. For wide-plank (8-inch+) flooring, reclaimed is often more cost-effective than new because wide planks are difficult and expensive to source from modern mills.
Can you match existing millwork in my home?
Yes. Send us a sample piece (even a small section is sufficient) or detailed measurements and photos of the existing profile. We can grind custom moulder knives to replicate virtually any historic millwork profile. This is one of our most popular services for homeowners restoring older homes where the original trim, baseboards, or moulding profiles are no longer available commercially. Custom knife grinding typically adds $150 to $300 to the order as a one-time setup fee.
Do you install the millwork products you produce?
We are a manufacturing and supply company, not an installation contractor. However, we work closely with a network of experienced installers, flooring contractors, and finish carpenters across the Houston area and can provide referrals. We also provide detailed installation guidelines with every millwork order and are available by phone to answer questions during the installation process.
What is the widest flooring plank you can produce?
We regularly produce flooring planks up to 12 inches in face width. Wider planks (14 to 16 inches) are possible from select reclaimed boards but require careful species and grade selection to ensure stability. Wide-plank flooring (8 inches and above) should always be installed using a combination of tongue-and-groove joinery and face-screwing or clip systems to manage the increased wood movement inherent in wider boards.
Can I provide my own reclaimed wood for you to mill?
Yes, we accept customer-supplied material for custom milling. We charge a processing fee based on the volume and complexity of the work. Before we process customer material, we inspect it for metal (embedded nails and hardware damage mill blades) and assess its suitability for the intended product. There is a modest risk of material loss during processing — typically 15% to 25% depending on the starting condition — which we discuss upfront.
How should I acclimate millwork products before installation?
All millwork products — especially flooring — should be acclimated in the installation environment for a minimum of 7 days before installation. Open the packaging and stack the material on stickers in the room where it will be installed. The HVAC system should be running at normal operating conditions. This allows the wood to equalize with the ambient humidity and temperature, reducing post-installation movement. Our kiln-dried material arrives at 6% to 8% moisture content, which is appropriate for most interior environments.
