Outdoor Living

Why Reclaimed Wood Belongs Outdoors

There is a persistent misconception that reclaimed lumber is fragile or only suitable for interior decorative use. The truth is exactly the opposite. Much of the reclaimed wood in our inventory was originally used in exterior and semi-exposed applications — barn siding, warehouse walls, dock timbers, and industrial roof decking — where it withstood decades of sun, rain, humidity, and temperature extremes. That proven track record makes reclaimed lumber an exceptional choice for fencing and decking.

Old-growth reclaimed lumber is denser than modern plantation wood, which means it absorbs less moisture, resists warping more effectively, and holds fasteners more securely. Species like bald cypress and heart pine contain natural oils and resins that provide inherent resistance to rot and insect damage without chemical treatment. When you combine this natural durability with proper installation practices and appropriate surface treatment, reclaimed outdoor lumber can easily match or exceed the lifespan of new pressure-treated material.

Beyond performance, reclaimed fencing and decking materials offer an aesthetic that new lumber cannot achieve. The weathered silver-gray patina, the subtle variations in color from board to board, and the natural texture of aged wood create an organic, lived-in look that complements gardens, landscapes, and outdoor living spaces. Architects and designers increasingly specify reclaimed material for high-end residential projects, boutique hospitality venues, and commercial outdoor spaces precisely because of this visual warmth.

Houston Lumber carries a complete line of fencing and decking products — from individual pickets to full fence and deck packages including posts, rails, boards, framing, and hardware. We also offer new pressure-treated lumber for substructure applications where code requires it, allowing you to build a hybrid project with reclaimed material on the visible surfaces and new treated lumber underneath.

Design Inspiration

Outdoor Project Ideas

Privacy Fence with Character

A full-height privacy fence built from reclaimed cypress or cedar boards provides security and curb appeal simultaneously. The natural color variation between boards creates a warm, organic boundary that complements landscaping far better than uniform pressure-treated pickets.

Elevated Deck with Mixed Materials

Combine reclaimed deck boards on the walking surface with new pressure-treated substructure below. This hybrid approach delivers the aesthetic of reclaimed wood with the code-compliant structural foundation that inspectors require.

Backyard Pergola

Reclaimed timber posts and rafters create a pergola with substance and character. Use 6x6 posts with 2x8 or 2x10 rafters and top with 2x2 shade slats. The result is an outdoor living room with real presence.

Garden Bed Borders

Short lengths and offcuts from our reclaimed inventory make excellent raised garden bed borders. The natural aging and non-toxic composition of untreated reclaimed wood is safe for food-contact gardening applications.

Pool Deck Surround

Reclaimed hardwood deck boards with a sanded smooth surface create a luxurious pool surround. The dense old-growth material resists splinter formation and the natural warmth of the wood stays comfortable underfoot even in Houston summers.

Outdoor Kitchen & Bar

Reclaimed lumber cladding, countertop supports, and overhead structure for outdoor kitchens and bars. Pair with reclaimed beam headers and custom millwork for a cohesive entertainment area.

Protection

Weather Treatment Options

While many reclaimed species offer natural weather resistance, proper surface treatment extends the lifespan of any outdoor lumber installation. We offer several treatment options that can be applied before delivery or recommended for on-site application.

Penetrating Oil Finish — Soaks into the wood grain to provide moisture resistance and UV protection from within. Does not create a surface film, so the wood retains its natural texture. Requires reapplication every 1 to 2 years.

Semi-Transparent Stain — Adds a tint of color while allowing the grain and character of the wood to show through. Provides moderate UV and moisture protection. Available in a range of wood-tone colors.

Solid Stain or Paint — Full-coverage finish for maximum weather protection. Covers the natural grain but provides the longest interval between maintenance cycles. Ideal for fence applications where uniformity is desired.

Water-Based Sealant — Clear protective coat that locks out moisture without changing the appearance of the wood. Low-VOC formulations available. Good for decking surfaces where you want to preserve the natural look.

Borate Treatment — A brush-on or spray preservative that provides long-lasting protection against termites, carpenter ants, and wood-boring beetles. Essential for wood in ground contact or high-moisture environments where insect pressure is a concern.

Durability

The Durability Advantage

Proven Track Record

Every piece of our reclaimed outdoor lumber has already survived decades of exposure. You are not guessing whether it will last — it already has.

Natural Rot Resistance

Species like bald cypress and heart pine contain natural extractives that repel fungi and insects without chemical treatment.

Higher Density

Old-growth reclaimed wood absorbs less water than modern plantation lumber, reducing the swelling and shrinking cycles that cause warping and splitting.

Better Fastener Holding

Dense reclaimed wood grips screws and nails more tightly, reducing the risk of popped fasteners and loose deck boards over time.

Low Maintenance Aging

Reclaimed wood weathers gracefully into a silver-gray patina. Many homeowners prefer to let it age naturally rather than maintaining a stained finish.

Project Spotlight

Montrose Privacy Fence — 280 Linear Feet

A homeowner in the Montrose neighborhood of Houston wanted a privacy fence that would stand apart from the standard pressure-treated pine fences on every other property in the area. We supplied 280 linear feet of 1x6 reclaimed cypress privacy fence boards — approximately 850 individual boards — along with 2x4 reclaimed cypress rails and new pressure-treated 4x4 posts for ground contact.

The reclaimed cypress boards ranged in color from honey gold to silver gray, creating a natural patchwork effect that the homeowner loved. Each board had slightly different surface texture and patina, making the fence look like it had been part of the property for decades. The cypress was left untreated to weather naturally, and two years later the fence has developed a uniform silver-gray tone that blends beautifully with the mature landscaping.

The total material cost for the reclaimed cypress fence was approximately 25% higher than a standard pressure-treated pine fence, but the homeowner considered it a worthwhile investment in both aesthetics and natural durability. The project was completed by a local fence contractor in four days, using standard fence-building techniques with no special tools or training required.

How to Order

Ordering Fencing & Decking

Minimum Orders

No minimum for will-call pickup. Delivery minimum is 50 boards or $400 in product value. Full fence packages (posts, rails, and boards for 50+ linear feet) qualify for package pricing.

Lead Times

In-stock fence boards and deck boards: 2 to 4 business days for local delivery. Custom-profiled material (dog-ear, shiplap): add 3 to 5 business days. Large projects (200+ lin ft): 1 to 2 weeks.

Complete Packages

We offer complete fence and deck material packages — just tell us the linear footage and height, and we will calculate all the posts, rails, boards, and hardware you need. Saves time and reduces waste from over-ordering.

Custom Processing

Boards can be cut to specific lengths, profiled (dog-ear, pointed, rounded), planed smooth, or pre-treated before delivery. Processing fees are modest and save you significant on-site labor.

Species Selection

Cypress is our top recommendation for outdoor applications in the Gulf South due to its natural rot resistance. Cedar is excellent for aromatic character. SYP is the most cost-effective option when paired with a good sealant.

Waste Factor

We recommend ordering 10% to 15% more material than your calculated requirement to account for cutting waste, defects found during installation, and future repairs. Our package quotes include a standard 10% overage.

Long-Term Care

Outdoor Lumber Care & Maintenance

Annual Inspection. Walk your fence line and deck surface once per year. Look for loose boards, popped fasteners, signs of rot at ground contact points, and insect activity. Catching problems early prevents expensive repairs later.

Cleaning. A pressure washer on a low-to-medium setting (under 1,500 PSI) removes dirt, mildew, and algae buildup. For delicate reclaimed surfaces, use a stiff-bristle brush with an oxygen bleach solution instead. Always let wood dry completely before applying any finish.

Refinishing Schedule. If you have applied a penetrating oil or semi-transparent stain, plan to recoat every 1 to 3 years depending on exposure. South-facing surfaces weather faster and need more frequent attention. Test the existing finish by sprinkling water on the surface — if it beads up, the finish is still working. If it soaks in, it is time to recoat.

Ground Contact. Fence posts in ground contact are the most vulnerable component. Even rot-resistant species will eventually decay at the soil line. Inspect post bases annually and apply a borate preservative to any areas showing early signs of softening. Consider installing posts on galvanized post brackets above the concrete footing to eliminate direct ground contact entirely.

Natural Weathering. If you prefer to let your reclaimed wood weather naturally, no maintenance is required beyond annual inspection. The wood will gradually develop a silver-gray patina that many homeowners find attractive. Structural integrity is not affected by surface graying — it is purely cosmetic.

Common Questions

Fencing & Decking FAQ

Is reclaimed wood durable enough for outdoor use in Houston's climate?
Yes. Houston's hot, humid climate is demanding, but reclaimed wood from the Gulf South was originally used in this same environment. Species like bald cypress and heart pine have natural resistance to moisture, rot, and insects. The higher density of old-growth wood also means less moisture absorption and better dimensional stability compared to modern plantation-grown lumber. With proper species selection and appropriate surface treatment, reclaimed outdoor lumber performs exceptionally well in the Houston climate.
Can I use reclaimed boards for deck framing (joists and beams)?
We recommend using new pressure-treated lumber for deck substructure (joists, beams, ledger boards) and reclaimed lumber for the visible deck boards, railings, and fascia. This hybrid approach gives you the code-compliant structural foundation that inspectors require along with the aesthetic character of reclaimed wood where it matters most. We stock both new treated framing lumber and reclaimed deck boards, so you can order everything from a single source.
How much material do I need for a fence?
For a standard 6-foot privacy fence using 1x6 boards, you need approximately 2 boards per linear foot of fence (accounting for a slight overlap or gap). Add one 4x4 post every 8 feet and two 2x4 rails per 8-foot section. For example, a 100-foot fence requires approximately 200 boards, 13 posts, and 26 rails. Tell us your total linear footage and desired height, and we will calculate a complete materials list with a 10% waste factor included.
Will the boards match in color and appearance?
Reclaimed boards will have natural variation in color, texture, and patina — this is part of their appeal. If you prefer a more uniform appearance, we can select boards from the same source and similar exposure conditions. We can also plane all boards to a consistent surface finish. For a perfectly uniform look, applying a semi-transparent stain will even out color differences while still allowing the wood grain to show through. Many customers specifically choose reclaimed fencing for the board-to-board variation.
Do reclaimed fence boards splinter?
Reclaimed wood is generally less prone to splintering than new wood because the surface fibers have been naturally compressed and aged over decades. For deck boards where bare feet will be in contact, we surface the walking side smooth to minimize any splinter risk. Fence boards are typically not sanded since direct skin contact is minimal. If you want a splinter-free finish on any product, we can plane and lightly sand the material before delivery.
How does the cost of a reclaimed fence compare to composite or vinyl?
Reclaimed wood fencing typically costs less than composite or vinyl per linear foot while offering superior aesthetics. A standard reclaimed cypress privacy fence runs $15 to $25 per linear foot installed (materials and labor), compared to $25 to $50 for composite and $20 to $40 for vinyl. Additionally, reclaimed wood is repairable — if a board is damaged, you replace one board, not an entire section. And unlike composite or vinyl, reclaimed wood is biodegradable and has zero plastic content.
