The Power of Reclaimed Beams
Nothing anchors a space like a reclaimed timber beam. Whether it spans the ceiling of a great room, supports a load-bearing wall, or frames a fireplace as a decorative mantel, reclaimed beams bring a sense of permanence, warmth, and history that no other building material can match. At Houston Lumber, our beam inventory is sourced from some of the most substantial structures in the Gulf South — cotton warehouses, sugar mills, railroad trestles, and industrial plants that used massive timbers as their structural backbone.
These beams are made from species that are exceptionally strong and dense: old-growth longleaf pine, Douglas fir, white oak, and bald cypress. Many of them were milled from trees that were 200 to 400 years old at the time of harvest, producing wood with a grain density and structural integrity that modern forestry simply cannot replicate. When you install a reclaimed beam, you are putting a piece of irreplaceable natural history into your building.
We carry beams in a range of sizes, from 4x4 posts up to 12x12 and larger timbers, in lengths up to 30 feet depending on available inventory. Every beam is inspected for structural soundness, de-nailed, and can be processed to your specifications — planed, sanded, wire-brushed, or left in its raw, as-found state. We also offer custom cutting services to dimension beams to your exact requirements.
Whether your project calls for a single mantel beam or a full post-and-beam frame, Houston Lumber has the inventory, expertise, and processing capability to deliver the right timber for the job.
Beam Categories
Structural vs. Decorative Beams
Structural Beams
Structural reclaimed beams are selected and graded for load-bearing applications. We evaluate every timber for soundness — checking for internal decay, insect damage, excessive checking, and residual hardware. Only beams that pass our structural assessment are designated for load-bearing use.
Common structural applications include ridge beams, floor girders, post-and-beam framing, lintels, and header beams. For projects requiring engineering certification, we can work with your structural engineer to verify load capacity and provide material documentation.
Available in Douglas fir, longleaf pine, white oak, and cypress. Sizes range from 6x6 through 12x12 and larger, in lengths up to 30 feet subject to inventory.
Decorative Beams
Decorative beams are chosen for their visual character rather than structural capacity. These timbers may have more surface checking, knots, bolt holes, or mortise pockets that add to their aesthetic appeal without compromising their decorative function.
Popular applications include ceiling beams (often mounted against drywall with hidden brackets), fireplace mantels, range hood surrounds, exposed stairway stringers, and restaurant or retail design features. Decorative beams can also be resawn into beam shells — three-sided wraps that mount over existing structural members to create the look of a solid timber without the weight.
We offer decorative beams in all available species and can finish them to your specification: rough-sawn, hand-scraped, wire-brushed, sanded smooth, or oiled and sealed.

Surface Finish
Hand-Hewn vs. Sawn Beams
Hand-Hewn Beams
Hand-hewn beams were shaped with broad axes and adzes, producing an irregular, faceted surface with visible tool marks. These beams typically date from the 18th and 19th centuries and are among the most sought-after reclaimed timbers available.
- •Irregular, organic surface texture
- •Visible axe and adze marks
- •Non-uniform dimensions (each beam is unique)
- •Often feature mortise-and-tenon pockets
- •Premium pricing due to rarity and character
Sawn Beams
Sawn beams were cut at a sawmill using circular or band saws, producing flat, consistent surfaces with parallel saw marks. These beams are more commonly found in 20th-century industrial and agricultural structures.
- •Clean, flat surfaces with saw marks
- •More uniform dimensions than hand-hewn
- •Can be planed smooth for a refined look
- •Easier to integrate with modern framing
- •More readily available and competitively priced
Where Beams Go
Common Beam Applications
Ceiling Beams
The most popular decorative application. Reclaimed beams mounted against vaulted or flat ceilings create visual warmth and define living spaces. Both solid beams and hollow beam shells are used depending on weight requirements and mounting conditions.
Fireplace Mantels
A single reclaimed beam above a fireplace becomes the focal point of any room. We offer mantel-ready beams in lengths from 4 to 10 feet, shaped and finished to your preference. Corbels and support brackets available separately.
Post-and-Beam Construction
Full timber frame construction using reclaimed posts, beams, and connecting hardware. We supply the timber and can coordinate with timber frame engineers and joiners to produce complete frame packages.
Ridge Beams & Structural Spans
Load-bearing applications where reclaimed timber replaces engineered products. Our structural-grade beams are inspected for soundness and can be certified by a licensed engineer for specific load requirements.
Range Hood Surrounds
Reclaimed beams framing kitchen range hoods have become a signature element of farmhouse and transitional kitchen design. We produce custom-sized surrounds from hand-hewn or sawn beams in any available species.
Commercial & Hospitality Design
Restaurants, hotels, breweries, and retail spaces use reclaimed beams to create dramatic architectural moments. We have supplied beams for bar overhead structures, lobby installations, and exterior entry features.
The Reclaimed Advantage
Why Choose Reclaimed Beams
Irreplaceable Material
Old-growth timber with 200+ year grain density is no longer commercially available. Reclaimed beams are the only way to access this caliber of wood for new construction.
Unmatched Character
Axe marks, mortise pockets, bolt holes, and natural checking create visual depth and texture that manufactured distressing cannot replicate. Every beam is genuinely one-of-a-kind.
Proven Structural Performance
A beam that has carried loads for 80 to 150 years has conclusively demonstrated its structural capacity. The wood has already endured its most significant drying and settling stresses.
Environmental Responsibility
Using reclaimed beams prevents massive timbers from entering landfills and eliminates the need to harvest old-growth-equivalent trees. A single 8x8x20 beam represents decades of tree growth saved.
Value Appreciation
As the supply of reclaimed old-growth timber continues to diminish, the value of installed reclaimed beams appreciates over time. They are an investment in both aesthetics and property value.
Design Versatility
Reclaimed beams work in rustic, farmhouse, industrial, modern, and transitional design styles. The raw material is a neutral canvas that adapts to its context through finishing and installation approach.
Project Spotlight
Katy Farmhouse — Full Beam Package
A custom home builder in the Katy area west of Houston commissioned us to supply a complete reclaimed beam package for a 4,500-square-foot modern farmhouse. The architect specified exposed ceiling beams throughout the main living areas — great room, kitchen, dining room, and covered patio — requiring a total of 14 beams ranging from 6x8 to 10x10 cross-sections and 8 to 22 feet in length.
We sourced the beams from a recently deconstructed rice warehouse in Beaumont, Texas, which yielded a matched set of Douglas fir timbers with consistent color, grain pattern, and surface character. All 14 beams came from the same structure, ensuring visual cohesion across the entire home. The beams were de-nailed, wire-brushed to remove surface dirt while preserving the original saw marks, and sealed with a clear penetrating oil finish.
The two largest beams — 10x10x22 — served as structural ridge beams in the great room, carrying the full roof load. Our team coordinated with the structural engineer to verify load capacity and specify connection hardware. The remaining beams were decorative, mounted against the ceiling plane using concealed steel brackets. Total beam weight for the project exceeded 4,200 pounds, requiring staged delivery and crane assistance for the structural installations.
The builder reported that the reclaimed beam package was the single most commented-on feature of the finished home during the open house event, and the property sold within two weeks of listing.

Planning Your Project
Installation Considerations
Installing reclaimed beams requires planning that goes beyond standard framing. Here are the key factors our team helps customers address before placing their order.
Weight. Reclaimed timbers are heavy — a solid 8x8x16-foot beam can weigh over 350 pounds depending on species and moisture content. Ensure that your structure, crane access, and installation crew can handle the load. For ceiling-mounted decorative applications where weight is a concern, consider beam shells as a lighter alternative.
Moisture Content. While reclaimed beams are generally well-seasoned, they should be stored in conditions similar to their final installation environment for at least two weeks before mounting. This allows the wood to acclimate and minimizes the risk of post-installation movement.
Connection Hardware. Structural beams require proper bearing surfaces and connections — steel brackets, through-bolts, or traditional joinery depending on the design. We can recommend hardware suppliers and connection details based on your application.
Finishing. Reclaimed beams can be left natural, oiled, waxed, or sealed depending on the look you want and the environment. For interior use, a penetrating oil finish enhances grain without creating a surface film. For exterior applications, a UV-resistant sealant is recommended.
Fire Safety. Interestingly, large timber beams are more fire-resistant than dimensional lumber. In a fire, the outer layer of a large timber chars and insulates the interior, maintaining structural integrity far longer than smaller framing members. This char-layer effect is recognized in building codes and is one reason timber frame construction is gaining popularity in fire-conscious design.
Electrical and Mechanical Coordination. If beams will be exposed in a ceiling, coordinate their placement with lighting, HVAC, sprinkler, and electrical rough-in schedules. Recessed lighting, pendant fixtures, and track lighting systems can all be integrated with exposed beam installations with proper advance planning.

Long-Term Care
Beam Care & Maintenance
Interior Beams. Interior reclaimed beams require minimal maintenance. Dust periodically with a soft cloth or vacuum with a brush attachment. If finished with a penetrating oil, reapply a light coat every 3 to 5 years to maintain the sheen. Avoid spraying water directly on beams during cleaning — a slightly damp cloth is sufficient for spot cleaning.
Exterior Beams. Beams used in outdoor applications (pergolas, porch posts, exterior structural members) should be sealed with a UV-resistant penetrating finish and recoated every 1 to 2 years. Inspect annually for signs of checking, splitting, or insect activity. Minor surface checks are normal and do not affect structural performance.
Checking and Movement. All large timbers will develop some degree of surface checking (small cracks along the grain) as they continue to equalize with their environment. This is a natural characteristic of solid wood and does not indicate structural failure. Deep checks that extend more than one-third through the beam depth should be evaluated by a professional.
Hardware Inspection. For structural beams, inspect connection hardware annually. Check for loose bolts, corroded fasteners, and any signs of bearing surface deterioration. Retighten connections as needed. Replace corroded fasteners with equivalent hardware.
