How It Works

Getting Started Is Simple

Every project follows a proven, transparent process from initial inquiry to final delivery. Here is exactly what to expect when you work with Houston Lumber.

01

Contact Us

Reach out with your project details. Tell us what you need — materials, dimensions, timeline, and delivery location. Phone, email, or form — whichever works best for you.

02

Get a Quote

We will assess your requirements and provide a detailed, no-obligation quote covering materials, processing, and logistics. Most quotes are returned within one business day.

03

We Execute

Our team handles sourcing, processing, cutting, and quality control. You stay informed with regular updates and photos throughout every stage of production.

04

Delivery

Your order arrives on time and to spec — whether it is a single pallet or a full truckload, we deliver across the Gulf South with full documentation.

Detailed 8-Step Workflow

1

Initial Inquiry & Needs Assessment

You reach out by phone, email, or our online form. Our team asks targeted questions: What species are you looking for? What dimensions? How many board feet? What is your project timeline? Is the material structural or decorative? These details allow us to match you with the right service path immediately.

2

Site Visit or Remote Evaluation

For demolition, salvage, and large-scale projects, we send a team member to your site to evaluate the structure and estimate recoverable materials. For processing and custom cutting orders, we review your specifications remotely and check inventory availability.

3

Proposal & Pricing

We prepare a detailed proposal that breaks down every cost: material, processing, custom cutting, transportation, and any additional services. Our pricing is transparent — no hidden fees, no surprise line items. You see exactly what you are paying for before you commit.

4

Material Sourcing & Staging

If your order requires material not currently in our inventory, we activate our sourcing network across the Gulf South. We pull from active demolition sites, partner salvage yards, and our own salvage operations to accumulate the species, grade, and volume your project requires.

5

Processing & Quality Control

Your material moves through our processing line — metal detection, de-nailing, kiln drying, planing, resawing, and profiling as needed. Every board is inspected at each stage. Defective material is culled and replaced so your final order meets spec.

6

Custom Cutting & Finishing

If your order includes custom dimensions or specialty profiles (tongue-and-groove, shiplap, V-groove), our milling team handles that next. Sample boards are produced first and checked against your specifications before the full run begins.

7

Packaging & Load Preparation

Finished material is banded, stickered, and palletized for safe transport. We photograph every load before departure and create a detailed packing list that includes species, dimensions, board count, and total board footage.

8

Delivery & Site Coordination

Our fleet delivers directly to your job site on your schedule. We coordinate with your superintendent or project manager to arrange drop-off timing that does not disrupt active work. Liftgate service is available for sites without forklift access.

Pricing

Transparent, Honest Pricing

We believe in straightforward pricing with no hidden fees. Here is how our pricing works for each service category.

Processing

Per Board Foot

Processing services are priced per board foot based on the level of work required. De-nailing only is at the lower end; full processing (de-nail + kiln dry + plane + dimension) is at the upper end. Volume discounts apply for orders over 5,000 BF.

Transportation

Per Mile + Load Size

Transportation is quoted based on distance from our Houston yard and the size of the load. Full truckloads (FTL) are more cost-effective per board foot than less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments. Local Houston-area deliveries carry a flat delivery fee.

Demolition & Salvage

Per Project Estimate

Demolition and salvage projects are quoted individually based on building size, material type, site conditions, and accessibility. We provide detailed written estimates after a site visit. In many cases, salvage value offsets demolition costs.

Custom Cutting

Per Linear Foot / Per Board Foot

Custom cutting and profiling are priced per linear foot for profile work (T&G, shiplap, V-groove) and per board foot for dimensional cutting. Setup fees may apply for specialty profiles that require custom tooling.

Consulting

Free Initial / Hourly or Per Project

The initial consultation call is always free — typically 20 to 30 minutes. Extended consulting engagements for large commercial projects are billed hourly or as a flat project fee, agreed upon in advance.

Volume Discounts

Tiered Pricing

Orders over 5,000 BF receive a 5% discount. Orders over 15,000 BF receive a 10% discount. Orders over 30,000 BF receive custom enterprise pricing. These discounts apply across processing, cutting, and material costs.

Typical Outcomes

Before & After Scenarios

Every reclaimed lumber project starts with raw, weathered material and ends with finished, ready-to-install stock. Here are typical transformations our services deliver.

Before

Nail-studded barn siding covered in 80 years of paint and grime

After

Clean, de-nailed, planed heart pine boards with rich, warm patina revealed underneath — ready for flooring or wall cladding installation

Before

Massive 10x12 cypress timbers pulled from a demolished warehouse, too large for any standard application

After

Resawn into 1x6 and 1x8 tongue-and-groove ceiling boards with consistent thickness, kiln dried to 8% MC, and profiled for direct installation

Before

Mixed lot of salvaged hardwood framing from a school demolition — dirty, warped, full of hidden metal

After

Sorted by species and grade, metal-detected, de-nailed, kiln dried, planed S4S, and cut to standard dimensional lumber sizes for reuse in residential framing

Before

Property owner with a condemned building and no plan for the lumber inside

After

Selective deconstruction recovers 12,000 BF of old-growth longleaf pine. Material processed and sold, offsetting demolition costs entirely

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum order size for your services?
There is no strict minimum for most services. We process orders as small as a few dozen board feet for homeowners and as large as 50,000+ board feet for commercial projects. For transportation, we recommend at least 500 board feet to make delivery cost-effective, but we can arrange smaller shipments as needed. Demolition and salvage projects are quoted individually regardless of size.
Can I bring my own lumber to your facility for processing?
Absolutely. Many of our customers bring reclaimed lumber they have sourced themselves — from barn teardowns, estate purchases, or personal property — and use our processing services to de-nail, kiln dry, plane, and dimension it. You can drop material at our yard at 121 Esplanade Blvd, Houston, TX 77060 during business hours, or we can arrange a pickup from your location.
How long does a typical project take from start to finish?
It depends on the scope. A straightforward processing order (de-nail, plane, and ship) can be completed in one to two weeks. A full-service project that includes sourcing, processing, custom cutting, and delivery typically takes three to six weeks. Demolition and salvage projects require additional time for site assessment and permitting — usually four to eight weeks from initial contact to material delivery. We provide firm timelines in every proposal.
Do you offer rush service?
Yes. We understand that construction schedules change and deadlines get moved up. Rush processing is available for most services at an additional charge — typically 25% to 50% above standard pricing depending on the scope and urgency. Contact us with your timeline and we will let you know what is achievable.
Do you ship outside the Gulf South region?
Yes. While our fleet operates primarily within Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, we coordinate nationwide shipping through our network of trusted freight carriers. We have shipped reclaimed lumber to projects in California, New York, Colorado, and everywhere in between. We handle all logistics — loading, documentation, carrier selection — so you just receive the material at your site.
What species of reclaimed lumber do you typically have in stock?
Our most commonly stocked species include longleaf heart pine, bald cypress, white oak, red oak, and Douglas fir. We also regularly carry mixed southern hardwoods, antique poplar, and reclaimed southern yellow pine. Inventory changes frequently as new salvage material comes in, so we recommend contacting us directly for current availability of specific species.
